Did Al Gore Cause Global Warming?
Here is evidence that he did …
After all, he did invent the Internet, didn’t he?

We at Sun have a rich tradition of many All Hands Meetings. Dilbert recently gave an alternative perspective.
Kind of brings back memories of the Addams Family.

Performance review time is coming up at Sun. I wonder if this is the way we should do it?

Thanks to Francine Hardway for Twittering the link to this hilarious Tom Rush video … a must see for anyone over 50 … or anyone under 50 who wants to know what being memory-challenged is all about.
By the way, the photo is a picture of Francine with her dog. Francine has been an outstanding contributor to the Arizona business community for the 16+ years I have known her. We were founding officers of the Arizona Software Association (now Arizona Technology Council) back in 1991.
Francine is an early adopter of all things technological – particularly those things on the cutting edge of the participation age. It was my privilege to register her first domain name (hardaway.com) and create her first web site, in 1995, I think. A lot of bits have gone down the wire since then.

As usual, I’m a couple of days late, but would like to share Google’s April 1st announcement of their “Dark Porcelain” project, which offers self-installed plumbing-based Internet access.
Enjoy! (But please wash your hands afterwards).
Thanks to Terry Gardner for pointing this out.

Thanks to my friend Richard Brincefield of GlobaLiteracy for pointing out the Digital Lifestyles post featuring two videos where Novell mocks the popular “I’m a Mac” advertisement series.
Enjoy!
PS: Who should Sun cast as OpenSolaris?

What is the price of a first class seat? On March 10th in Salt Lake City, it was just a correct answer to a trivia question. On that Saturday afternoon, as my wife and I were awaiting our flight home to Arizona, US Airways was giving away first class upgrades on our flight. Apparently not too many frequent fliers travel on Saturday afternoon!
The first trivia question: “Who are the only two members of the Baseball Hall of Fame who were not players, managers, umpires or executives?”
Do you know? Neither did anyone else.
“Abbott & Costello!” declared the gate agent, “made famous by their “Who’s on first?” routine.
But you can’t always believe what you hear. This morning, as I was preparing this post, I learned that Abbott & Costello are not members of the Hall of Fame, despite frequent claims to the contrary.
But it makes for a good story. 🙂
Did US Airways give away their first class upgrades? They did, to a lady who knew at least 6 of Snow White’s 7 dwarfs. I didn’t know that answer either, but Claudia and I were already upgraded the old fashioned way – earning the privilege by flying so many darn miles with US Airways!

An interestingly obnoxious thing happened at Sun yesterday. Somebody mistakenly set up an email alias that broadcast a message to a very broad audience at Sun – perhaps the whole company. A few replies to that email were also broadly distributed, triggering a literal avalanche of angry responses, saying “take me off this list,” sometimes in rather interesting ways. Needless to say, my “Delete” key got a bit of extra service last night.
The most interesting response to the flood of superflous email was a link to an article entitled, “No E-Mail Fridays Transform Office,” discussing one company’s unique policy to prohibit email exchanges each Friday. This policy was an attempt to get people talking to each other again, rather than using the familiar, but often mis-used email crutch.
The article mentioned that “The volume of e-mails has exploded in recent years with over 170 billion now being sent daily around the globe, according to technology market researcher Radacati Group. That’s two million every second.”
The Sun email servers coped nicely with the little volume explosion today, but it’s probably a good thing a 2mb file wasn’t attached to that initial email! I suppose the original sender of the rogue email message wished emails would have been banned at Sun yesterday.
This is a great example of how a small mistake can have a huge effect in the Participation Age. In the words of Sergeant Phil Esterhaus of Hill Street Blues fame (now that really shows my age), “Hey, let’s be careful out there!”
