Terry Gardner – WikiWikiWiki

Congratulations, Terry Gardner, for joining the ranks of bloggers in the outside world. For those of us who know Terry within Sun, we know Terry as a passionate advocate of using wiki and blog technology to build communities and enhance collaboration among many people. It’s great to see that he snagged the “wiki” handle on blogs.sun.com and is venturing beyond the Sun borders.

Terry’s first post is an articulate treatment on the use of wiki’s – what they are and how they can be used to advantage. I think you’ll find this a good read. I’m sure there will be many more to come.

Treo Blogging Attempts

Just a quick report on my attempts to blog from my Treo 700p. This little exercise has fallen way short of my expectations. I tried u*Blog, HBlogger, BlogPlanet, and finally, mo:Blog.

I was able to blog text messages with 3 out of the 4. It turns out that BlogPlanet requires a Java Virtual Machine for Palm that Sun gave up on a couple of years ago. I found a copy, but BlogPlanet froze my Treo, and couldn’t successfully post a message using the IBM JVM.

It seems that real development in this area has ground to a halt. For example, the mo:Blog download page provides the “latest stable build,” dated April, 2005. It offers a “bleeding edge” release dated March 2006 with this caveat, “Bleeding edge releases contain the latest features, but are in no way fully tested. If you are not afraid of frequent crashes and other annoyances and want to contribute to the production of mo:Blog, then these builds are for you. Do not complain if something is broken or if these builds break anything else besides your PDA … you have been warned!” (I couldn’t get it to work).

I think the message I got back from BlogPlanet tech support told the story of my poor experience: “sorry, no idea. I didn’t follow this topic any more. Just google for running MIDlets on Palm. I’m sure there is still a way to do this.”

It just seems that the Participation Age is not yet as portable as I’d like it to be. So, as I await anxiously, but perhaps in vain, for some progress in this area, let me share the photo I tried to post with my Treo last night. It was taken with my Treo camera last Friday evening, but posted this morning the old fashioned way, using w.bloggar and manual photo upload from my PC.

Well, both clients I have tested are pretty limited. I can’t figure out how to support categories with either one. I’ll do some more digging.

Good night!

Have you seen the big red button from Staples labeled “easy”? My daughter gave me a desk model. When I give it a tap, it responds with an enthusiastic, audible, “That was easy!”
I gave it a quick tap after the u*Blog blog client worked easily the first time.

In this Participation Age we live in, it seems only natural that I should be able to blog on the run – from my trusty Treo.
And what better way to spend a bit of time on a Saturday night testing it out?

DogMelon Delight – Wiki Notes

For many years, I have been a prolific note-taker. Starting in college, I took notes on yellow copy paper, three-hole punched to fit my looseleaf notebook. I liked the broad, open space on the page, unrestricted by lines. I favored the unique color that easily separated my notes from run-of-the-mill white paper. Plus, copy paper was really cheap.

Even after college, I still took lots of notes. For a while, I switched to blue paper, but soon gravitatated back to yellow. After a while, I switched to half-size (5 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches) but still bought reams of yellow paper.

Until last summer. Then, I switched almost exclusively to taking notes on my computer. I had grown tired of all the file drawer space my notes took up and the time it took to file and retrieve the notes. While I routinely took notes of long meetings or workshops on my computer, I still recorded notes from telephone calls and short meetings on my yellow paper. I figured it was time for a change.

So, since that time, I have typed and filed away hundreds of pages of notes using Sun’s StarOffice word processor. But alas, I was saving lots of paper and filing time, but retrieval was still questionable. And StarOffice was really overkill for 90% of my notes.

Enter DogMelon, a quirkly little company in Australia. I began to search for a suitable note-taking program that would match my desire for freedom of expression but satisfy my need for easy organization and retrieval. Most programs I tried were too restrictive – like lines on note paper I rejected 35 years ago. Then I found DogMelon Note Studio – literally a personal wiki, where I could take notes and easily organize and retrieve my thoughts, all to my heart’s content. Plus, it brought an unexpected bonus – all my notes could be synched with my new Treo 700p – so I could carry and update all my organized notes in the palm of my hand!

Note Studio isn’t perfect. It has some odd ways of doing things. I have already assembled a short list of features I would like to see in the next release. But in the critical areas of flexibility, organization, retrieval and speed, it really matches my style.

What I really haven’t figured out, though, is what a quirky name like DogMelon has to do with taking notes.

Zone Manager for OpenSolaris

Brad Diggs, a member of the Systems Engineering team I lead, recently completed the release of Zone Manager v1.8 as an official contribution to the OpenSolaris project. The purpose of the Zone Manager project is to greatly simplify zones creation and management for the Solaris 10 operating system.

My hat is off to Brad, who completed this innovative project as one of those “above and beyond” activities – because he saw a specific need, realized he could make a difference and put in the long hours to make it happen – both from a technical and legal compliance standpoint. I didn’t realize the hoops one had to jump through to officially contribute open source software!

Congratulations, Brad, for a job well done!

Blogging about Blogging in Real Time at Sun

I’m in the midst of an interesting activity. John Clingan, a popular Sun blogger, is giving an internal talk to a dispersed group from the Sun US Software practice by teleconference. So, as he talks about the virtues and challenges of blogging, I am writing this little article and linking to his photo. I also just sent him an invititation to connect via LinkedIn.

By the way, John’s “Jonathan Ratio,” which I defined as the ratio of one blogger’s hit count to Jonathan Schwartz’s hit count on blogs.sun.com, is currently 29%. The Clingan Zone is currently #13 on the list of Hot Blogs on blogs.sun.com.

This is my little “Participation Age Moment” for today.
