  • The Craftsman Halloween Skeleton. I don’t know how long this will be available, but it is a pretty entertaining interactive skeleton made of Craftman wrenches and other tools.

My wife and I share a 24 foot square loft in the upper story of our house as my office and her sewing room. This afternoon, my wife, daughter and I were sitting in the loft, bantering back and forth, sharing random comments about our respective blogs. Claudia said, “Did you see the comment on Angie’s blog that came from something called Twitter?”

So, I explained about Twitter and tried to find out what happened. As it turns out, yesterday, I posted a short note on Twitter: “Enjoying the blog of my slightly neurotic daughter: link

Apparently one of the people who follows me on Twitter shared it with someone else who then visited and commented on Angie’s blog: “I am not related and don’t know you from Adam … someone who I follow on twitter put up the link, I followed and am glad I did. Excellent Blog.”

I suppose the moral is: “Be careful what you blog! You never know who you might be listening … or twittering … or whatever.”

We folks who blog about technical things need to stop sometimes and consider how our technology is affecting and enabling non-techie folks in a pretty profound way.

Consider the blog my daughter Angie posted yesterday. On the surface, it is about making cookies (she makes great cookies). But it goes much deeper if you think about it. This is an example of a growing phenomena that is profounly changing and enriching our lives. It is all about a progressively widening circle of friends and family, ranging from several young married girls like my daughter to older folks like my wife and other “grannies” to young bloggers like my 13-year old daughter.

None of these people are particularly technically astutue, but they share ideas and hopes and dreams and challenges with each other through their blogs. It really is participation. Angie’s post had 20 comments before I added mine. Wow! I’ve never had that many on my blog! Plus, Angie’s blogroll lists 60 other bloggers she regulary “stalks.” The list seems to grow and grow.

Back to us techies. It is gratifying to know that our industry really has provided these significant new opportunities for social participation.
